How to not have a policy conversation

I recently had this conversation on Twitter:

While this sort of thing is immensely frustrating (people probably shouldn't assume we’ll all find the same issues with a Nobel Laureate’s op-ed), it did teach a lesson. The proliferation of digital media and news sources has made it possible to rely solely on one's own echo chamber for news. We tend to follow those we like and ignore or ridicule those with whom we disagree.

I'll be the first to say I usually just dismiss Fox News and the National Review out of hand, but I think I'd be better off engaging their arguments. Who knows? I'll probably learn something.
